35 Faces of the Breakthrough T1D One Walk: Meet Bryce

35 Faces, 35 years of Walking, 35 Reasons to Give

Hi, my name is Bryce. I was diagnosed on December 27, 2007 after being in DKA and being misdiagnosed with a stomach virus that my pediatrician said to “let it run its course.” At the hospital, my family met a Breakthrough T1D volunteer who told us about support groups and classes that would help my family during this time. She also told us about the Breakthrough T1D One Walk program to raise money for research and hopefully one day a cure.  We decided to start a family team consisting of family, friends and co-workers. In 2008, Bryce’s Insulin Army was formed! We walked our first North Metro walk and although we didn’t raise a lot of money the first year, we did our small part. It was a day full of hope and tears. We were hooked and determined to raise more money and spread as much awareness as we could about the great things the Breakthrough T1D was doing. We created a Facebook page for our team to share pictures and updates of our fundraising adventures which have included: a 5k, dart tournaments, selling homemade dresses, selling paper sneakers, sending out letters, applying for EVAPS through Walmart, team t-shirt sales, selling bags of pecans, collecting aluminum cans, and proceeds from a bubble gum machine. I love to design a new t-shirt each year! This year will be our 8th Walk or as we have coined it our “F8TH Walk” representing our 8th year. I have faith that one day I will be able to say that I used to have T1D.

Please consider supporting Bryce’s fundraising efforts by donating to his Breakthrough T1D One Walk team here.
