35 Faces of the Breakthrough T1D One Walk: Meet Evan

in

35 Faces, 35 years of Walking, 35 Reasons to Give

On April 15, 2016 after a week of incessantly asking for more water and milk, our two-year-old son, Evan, began soaking through diapers and losing weight rapidly. After work that Friday, we decided that it just wasn’t adding up and called our pediatrician’s after-hours line. When we described Evan’s symptoms, we asked, “Is this something to be worried about? Should we take him to the ER, to urgent care, bring him in on Monday, or is it nothing?” After a pause, the doctor told us to take him to urgent care. Unfortunately, Evan’s blood sugar came back six times normal. We were lucky, they said, that we caught it before he entered DKA.

To say that Evan has handled his diagnosis well would be the understatement of the decade. Evan has always been easygoing, but his ability to hold out a finger for us to prick for a blood sugar test, all while smiling and saying, “It doesn’t hurt, Mommy, it just tickles,” has taught us what bravery means. He is as courageous and resilient as any adult we’ve known.

People have been asking us what they can do to help. There are so many ways for them to help. They can read our story, share our story, walk with us, and donate. We want other parents to know the symptoms of T1D, so that they aren’t blindsided. We just started fundraising through Facebook and recruiting our team members! So far our group is comprised of family, friends, friends of friends, parents of friends, Evan’s former daycare teachers, and his babysitter who is also T1D. We hope our team keeps growing as our campaign advances. Our goal is to raise $5,000 – we are almost halfway there!

We are beyond excited to take part in this incredible event and make some memories at the Breakthrough T1D One Walk this year. October 15th – the date of the Breakthrough T1D One Walk in Atlanta – will be Evan’s 6 month dia-versary (T1D diagnosis anniversary). We can’t wait to celebrate him and all his accomplishments with our family and friends.

Please consider supporting Evan’s fundraising efforts by donating to his Breakthrough T1D One Walk team here.
