Breakthrough T1D One Walk New Team Spotlight: Savannah’s Stars

in

The Georgia Chapter’s Breakthrough T1D One Walk is one of our biggest events, in terms of participation and dollars raised. It is an event where nearly 10,000 people share two common goals: to raise money for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and connect with others who are living with and affected by this autoimmune disease. Traditionally, there are two different types of teams who fundraise for the Breakthrough T1D One Walk: Family and Corporate Teams. One of our fantastic new family teams this year is Savannah’s Stars. Read Savannah’s story below to learn why she is so excited for her first Breakthrough T1D One Walk on October 15th.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) this past July 3rd in sunny San Diego. What was supposed to be a family trip, ended up being the trip that changed my life! My parents noticed something was different about with me and quickly took me to Rady Children’s Hospital. We are so thankful for the San Diego Ronald McDonald House that provided a place for my family to stay during my hospital visit and for our family in southern California who dropped everything to help us. Even though I was just diagnosed and only 7 years old, I am already checking my blood sugar all by myself! I am excited for the day that I won’t have to take insulin shots and have so many finger pricks. I am especially looking forward to the day where I can eat all the chocolate I want without having to count carbs and bolus! I am excited to be walking at the Breakthrough T1D One Walk this year with my team – Savannah’s Stars. My friends and family are walking with us! We have raised over 9,000 so far! I want people to know that a cure for T1D would mean everything to me. I hope you will read my team page and come walk with me on October 15th.
