35 Faces of the Breakthrough T1D One Walk: Meet Preston

in

35 Faces, 35 years of Walking, 35 Reasons to Give

My favorite memory of the Breakthrough T1D One Walk is from our first walk. Almost my entire baseball team came, gathered around me and carried me for part of the walk. I will never forget that. We have been participating in the walk since I was diagnosed in 2011 at the age of 9. Every year, the Breakthrough T1D One Walk gets better and better! My friends from school love to come walk with me. Not only do my friends and family walk with us, my oldest sister and her sorority sisters from Auburn come back for the Breakthrough T1D One Walk each year. It means a lot to me that everyone comes into town to celebrate me and my accomplishments over the past year. The most successful fundraising method my team has is definitely Facebook. Our first year we hosted an “Open Mic Night” at a coffee house – that was a lot of fun. This year, the company where my Dad and uncle work, Inglett & Stubbs, is also fundraising and walking!

I want people to know that T1D does not limit me in any way. I am more active now than I have ever been. I also want people to know that T1D is an autoimmune disease, and has nothing to do with eating too much sugar or not getting enough exercise. It can happen to anyone. A cure would mean that I wouldn’t have to think about my blood sugar 24/7. I could have a meal or a snack without counting carbs, calculating for insulin and giving myself an injection. I could also sleep through the night, or drive a car without worrying about going too low.

Please consider supporting Preston’s fundraising efforts by donating to his Breakthrough T1D One Walk team here.
