John BishopMeet John Bishop, this month’s Supporter Spotlight.  John is doing great work with the YLC and getting more young professionals involved with Breakthrough T1D.  Read more about John and his involvement below.

What is your role with Breakthrough T1D?

I am the President of the Young Leadership Committee and the Chair of the YLC’s Fire and Ice committee.

What attracted you to the cause?

My wife; she is a Type 1 diabetic and was diagnosed at the age of 12.  My cousin was also diagnosed with Type 1 several years ago, and I wanted to do my part on their behalves.

What motivates you to stay involved?

I would have to say my wife.  Seeing firsthand the daily struggles that Type 1 presents for her motivates me to keep pushing forward, and she has taught me to never give up.  Despite the challenges, her incredible courage and strength motivates me to do what I can to make her life, and the lives of all of those living with Type 1 better.

In your opinion, what is the most important work that this organization does?

Most certainly the research that is funded by Breakthrough T1D’s efforts.  Finding a cure for Type 1 is made possible by the forward progression of the world’s top researchers, whose efforts would not be possible but for the work of Breakthrough T1D.  Likewise, Breakthrough T1D does incredible work in educating both newly diagnosed and longtime Type 1’s to unite them together in the fight against diabetes.

What do you hope the organization will achieve in the near future? In the long term?

Ultimately to find a cure for Type 1.  There have been great strides made in the past several years with the introduction of the artificial pancreas and beta cell encapsulation therapy, and I would like to see these treatments continue to develop and improve so that they are readily available to the masses.

What is your favorite Breakthrough T1D event?

Hands down the Gala.  It is such an inspiring event and I love that for one night, all of those who are living with Type 1 are united as one and we can all celebrate in the strides being made in finding a cure.  The Gala brings the Type 1 community together and reminds us all of why we do the things that we do for Breakthrough T1D and to never give up in this fight.

Do you have any hobbies or special interests?

I am an avid cyclist and snow skier; I am also big into fashion.  I also enjoy working with my wife on her newly launched jewelry company and seeing the incredible talent that she has as a designer.  Above all, my favorite activity is spending time with my family.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

I love to cook; my favorites are pastries and desserts.

What Valentine’s Day gift are you giving your T1D sweetheart?

I think I may have to keep this one a secret as she might be reading this!

What are your suggestions for people to get the T1D in their life for Valentine’s Day?

Flowers are always a great option and make anyone feel good.  Sometimes it’s the simplest things, like a nice card that make the perfect gift.
