Meet Fall Intern, Kenyatta Malloy

Kenyatta MalloyBorn and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, I am a 22 year old senior at Frostburg State University, majoring in communication studies. I like to think of myself as a philanthropist of the heart. I love giving back to organizations that help individuals who are near and dear to my heart.

I am a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority, a great organization that introduced me to two incredibly strong women who are living and thriving with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The friendships I have built with my sorority sisters have shown me what life is like with T1D. I have learned how to test and monitor blood sugars, handle insulin pumps, and give insulin shots. It is truly humbling to gain this perspective but inspiring to see my friends grow and flourish in spite of the daily challenges.

Since starting my position in August with Breakthrough T1D as the Special Events Intern, I have had the opportunity to assist with the Walsh, Colucci, Lubeley & Walsh PC annual golf tournament and the Breakthrough T1D Hope Gala. I have had the opportunity to spend my days with inspiring staffers and get to know some very special volunteers. It has been a fun and very rewarding opportunity! Because the staff size is so small, I was able to help everyone in different ways and with various tasks. Something I have learned is that teamwork is everything!

Meeting and working with the DC Gala Chairs, Barbara and Lauren Rapaport, was also an amazing opportunity. They are such a kind family, and their longtime involvement with Breakthrough T1D is very inspiring! My most memorable day was spent running around DC picking up auction items from donors.  Carrying an autographed hockey stick on the metro certainly got me a lot of attention!

Advice I would give to future interns: be open to learning. Look at every task, no matter how big or small, as an important piece of a bigger picture!
