January 2019 Newsletter
Happy New Year! We hope that the start of your 2019 is full of hope, health and happiness as we all embark on another year. We love the promise and energy that the new year brings. The chance to reflect on the prior year and express our gratitude for all that was accomplished. And to look forward with a spirit of renewal and think about what all can be done in the next 12 months. At Breakthrough T1D, as we’ve reflected on the last year we are grateful for all of our wonderful volunteers who’ve given their time and talent to support our mission, the hundreds of donors who’ve contributed to accelerating research initiatives and for each of you for inspiring the work we do. And, as we look forward to the coming year ahead we are filled with optimism and a spirit of renewal. There are incredible efforts happening within our outreach programming. And throughout the year we will gather for our fundraising events – the Breakthrough T1D One Walk in Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Fargo and Minot. But most importantly, we are inspired by the continued progression and energy poured into research and eagerly anticipate another year of highlights and advancements. We look forward to seeing you all in 2019! We wish you all a happy, healthy, peaceful and abundant New Year and all the year through! Karen Abrahamson Tammy Beintema |

Ambassadors in Action
Our ambassadors have been busy throughout the last year representing Breakthrough T1D at corporate and community events, volunteering at Breakthrough T1D events and sharing their T1D story to inspire fundraising and say thank you. If you are interested in being an Ambassador in 2019 applications are open now. Contact Tammy at tbeintema@BreakthroughT1D.org |
Need a New Year’s Resolution? Try Outreach!
Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to get more involved or give back to your local community? We can help! Consider becoming an outreach volunteer! This is a wonderful way to share your T1D story to help newly diagnosed families and adults adjust to life with T1D. We need the help of many volunteers all across ND, SD, MN, and Iowa to reach the hundreds of newly diagnosed folks that connect with our chapter each year. If you are a parent of a child with T1D or an adult with T1D and are interested in learning more, please contact Tammy at tbeintema@BreakthroughT1D.org |

Tidepool to Develop an FDA-Regulated Insulin Delivery App with Support from Breakthrough T1D and The Helmsley Charitable Trust
With an influx of $6 million combined from funders Breakthrough T1D and The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, Tidepool—a nonprofit software organization—is expanding their team to develop and support Tidepool Loop, a hybrid closed loop automated insulin delivery app. The app, which Tidepool will submit to the FDA for review, will be based on the current DIY Loop, and will enable a larger contingent of the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community to better manage their blood-glucose levels from their smartphones. The Microbiome Strikes Again
The human digestive tract hosts a community of trillions of microbes—called the microbiome—that play an important role in our immune system, and Ramnik Xavier, M.D., is an expert. Funded in part by Breakthrough T1D, Dr. Xavier and his team are taking part in the DIABIMMUNE clinical trial, which follows microbiome development from birth until age three in Finland, Estonia and Russia.
