Everyday Heroes – Amber Fuller
in Awareness, Volunteers

2018 National Volunteer Week is here! We are grateful to have devoted volunteers who work year round to turn Type One into Type None. We would like to feature our local #EverydayHeroes throughout this week and beyond. It’s an honor to recognize individuals, families and businesses that go above and beyond to serve our local T1D community. Next up, Amber Fuller.
Amber has been a blessing to the Chapter’s Outreach Program. She helped establish Empower1, a group for adolescents living with T1D. Having firsthand experience, raising a teenager with T1D and receiving her doctorate, she understands the need for a support system and the positive impact it can have on youth with T1D. “Empower1 is a great opportunity to talk with other teens about our type 1 diabetes experiences, but more importantly to have some fun together. I like that the teens get to drive the activities,” testimonial from Sadie, 15, an Empower1 attendee.
Amber and her family also participate in Breakthrough T1D One Walk every year and raise awareness throughout the community about type 1 diabetes and Breakthrough T1D resources.
Amber states, “I am very grateful to be able to partner with Breakthrough T1D to form Empower1. I really feel that it’s important because not only is it difficult to go through your teenage years, but even more difficult to go to through them with diabetes. This group was formed to create a peer support structure for teens living with T1D. I cannot tell you how excited I am to see this group continue to grow and carry-on for over a year now. I am excited to see what the future brings for Empower1!” Thank you, Amber!
