Meet Jim McCue, our 2018 One Walk Event Chair
in Awareness, Fundraising
Jim McCue, Jr. became a volunteer with Breakthrough T1D in October 2016, after his then-four-year-old son Daniel was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Having registered for his first One Walk event before his family even left the hospital when Daniel was initially diagnosed, the McCues walked with their family and friends and volunteered at three additional One Walk events that October. Jim, his wife Jenn, Daniel, and youngest son Owen began volunteering, fundraising, and becoming active Breakthrough T1D chapter and T1D community members.
In 2017, Jim served as One Walk New Family Team Chair for the New Jersey Metro & Rockland County Chapter. Jim connected with first-year One Walk teams, welcoming new teams to the Walk community.
Jim and his family participated at One Walk, Jersey Shore with their personal Walk team, Team Danny X, and volunteered at Morris County, Jersey City and Rutgers University. It’s precisely their passion for One Walk – the McCues value One Walk’s ability to strengthen ties it creates within the T1D community – and their dedication to the event’s success that has led to Jim’s appointment as Event Chair.
As Event Chair, Jim partners with the Walk staff team to create and execute an impactful Breakthrough T1D One Walk season. Working with our Family Team Committee, Jim helps identify and secure new family and corporate teams as well as provide stewardship to existing family teams. Additionally, Jim drives new corporate support, leveraging his personal and professional contacts to secure new Walk sponsorship.
When he isn’t wearing his Breakthrough T1D Volunteer costume, Jim is a Captain with the FDNY Emergency Medical Services, working as a paramedic and as the Deputy Director of the Workers’ Compensation Unit, overseeing ill and injured members of service, and active and retired members with World Trade Center-related illnesses. He is also training to run his very first race, a 10K, as a part of Team Breakthrough T1D.
