This August, Breakthrough T1D is bringing a fun and educational event to Central Florida.  For the first time, Breakthrough T1D of Central Florida will be hosting a TypeOneNation Summit for individuals, families, and caregivers affected by type one diabetes (T1D) at all life stages.  This event will feature opportunities to talk to experts about research advancements, meet with other attendees to exchange ideas, participate in discussions important to you, hear from professionals with insights into type one, and let the kids experience a separate enrichment program.

This year, Breakthrough T1D of Central Florida is excited to welcome a well-rounded group of speakers.

  • Gary Scheiner, an awarded Certified Diabetes Educator and author, will be discussing the evolution of diabetes care with all attendees.  In addition, Mr. Scheiner will be leading a breakout session.
  • Kady Helme, a former Breakthrough T1D National Youth Ambassador, will talk about her experience as a participant of the Artificial Pancreas Project.
  • Nicole Johnson, a former Miss America and type one advocate, will be leading a breakout session about carrying on with type one diabetes and co-leading a panel discussion for teens who are preparing to make the high school to college transition.
  • The Type 1 Club at UCF along with physician assistant Rachelle Stone will be co-leading the panel discussion for teens with Nicole Johnson.
  • For families of younger children with type one diabetes: Dr. Omar Hudson, a local pediatric endocrinologist, will lead a breakout session that focuses on how children can live healthy and active lifestyles while managing their diabetes.

There will be additional opportunities for individuals, families, and caregivers to learn more about recent research advancements and how to manage type one diabetes at the TypeOneNation Summit.  Kids, ages 5-12, will have the opportunity to enjoy a separate enrichment program for the day which will include activities like building a 6 foot car as a team.  Finally, there will be plenty of time to mingle and share ideas with other attendees in between events and during lunch.
