RIV Breakthrough T1D Research Update
in General

There are so many exciting things happening in type 1 diabetes (T1D) research! Breakthrough T1D has been instrumental in funding some very promising avenues for treating T1D until we find a cure.
First, a company called Viacyte recently received FDA approval to begin clinical trials on encapsulation. Encapsulation is a way to safely implant and protect insulin producing precursor cells in someone with T1D. If the initial trial goes well, Viacyte will expand the clinical trial with more participants in the next year.
Second, Merck has begun clinical trials with the very exciting development of Smart Insulin. This trial will aim to test the efficacy of glucose-responsive insulin.
Finally, the artificial pancreas, already in clinical trials, is quickly becoming more of a reality both in research and big pharma environments. Breakthrough T1D is helping to fund and develop all of these promising treatments.
