Breakthrough T1D and Waco – Inaugural One Party, T1D Awareness Game and the Cox Sisters

The inaugural One Party was held on September 26 with keynote speaker Lauren Cox, of the Baylor Lady Bears Basketball team. Lauren Cox is a T1D athlete, but also the Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year, a Breakthrough T1D Children Congress Advocate, and an inspiration the T1D community. The One Party was chaired by Brandy Kemph, Craig Cherry, and Kristen and Mike Pool. The event was held at McLane Stadium and raised $50,000 for type 1 diabetes research.

A panel of speakers including Dr. David Hoffman, the Baylor Lady Bears Team Doctor, Alex Olson, Director of Athletic Medicine at Baylor University, and Dr. Anna VanderHeider, Lauren Cox’s endocrinologist. Lauren shared the story of her diagnosis at age 7, her successes and challenges as a T1D athlete, and her sister’s recent diagnosis.

Lauren’s sister, Whitney Cox, also plays basketball at Lubbock Christian University. Whitney was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. In honor of both Cox girls, Baylor University hosted a Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Game on October 30 when Lubbock Christian University Women’s Basketball team made a trip to Waco, TX. Senior Lauren faced off against her freshman sister Whitney in this special matchup. During this game, both Lauren and Whitney were honored and their T1D diagnosis was highlighted. Youth Ambassadors from the Waco area, Baylor fraternities Delta Tau Delta and Delta Episilon Psi, volunteered at the T1D Awareness game. Unique Breakthrough T1D shirts were made to support both Cox girl’s and their respective basketball teams.
