Dearest Friends,
As we step into a new season, we are filled with gratitude and hope. At the very top of our gratitude list is the incredible Breakthrough T1D community—you have stood with us, supported us, and fueled progress toward a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). Your generosity is the reason for so many breakthroughs in treatment and care that are changing lives every day.
It is with great humility and excitement that we share that we will proudly serve as the Honorees for the 44th Annual Breakthrough T1D Boston Gala—One Night, taking place on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport. We hope you will join us for this extraordinary evening of celebration, connection, and impact.
Many of you know our story with T1D. Colin was diagnosed with T1D in 2002 at the age of 14. What began as a routine check-up quickly became a life-changing day, when a perceptive doctor decided to run one last test—one that sent Colin and his family straight to the ER. Like so many, our journey with T1D since then has been defined by both challenges and relentless hope.
That relentless hope has been fulfilled in the 23 years since by staggering advances in technology and innovation, fueled in part by Breakthrough T1D. These advances have transformed what it means to live as a T1D father, husband, and professional. From completing the Boston Marathon to raising funds for T1D research, to balancing demanding careers, to navigating the sleepless nights and constant balancing act of parenting young children, our family has relied every day on advancements like continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin pumps, and automated insulin delivery systems to embrace life’s biggest milestones while also maintaining our peace of mind (and sanity!).
One milestone that sticks out for us is having both of our children, Eddie (6) and Bridget (4), screened through Breakthrough T1D’s T1Detect program this year. We cannot describe the relief we felt when their results came back negative despite our shared family history of T1D. At the same time, we remain deeply mindful of the millions of families who do not share that same relief, and it is for them that we feel an even stronger commitment to this mission.
Our journey with Breakthrough T1D began more than a decade ago, when Colin helped lay the groundwork for what would become the T1D Fund: A Breakthrough T1D Venture. From there, his service grew to include the Chapter Board, the Corporate Development Committee, and the role of Chapter Board President. These years, marked by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a chapter merger, were also a time of incredible momentum and progress. We are proud to have played even a small part in that history, alongside so many of you.
Today, we are inspired by the incredible pace of progress—new therapies on the horizon, smarter technology improving quality of life, and research breakthroughs that bring us closer to cures. Yet every late-night CGM alarm, every family trip interrupted by a stop to treat a low blood sugar, and every anxious day of monitoring levels after an insulin pump malfunction reminds us that the burden of T1D remains heavy, and there is much more work to do. We believe deeply in the power of this community to drive that work forward.
Please join us on Saturday, April 11 for the 2026 Gala. Together, we will celebrate the momentum, honor the progress, and recommit ourselves to the future we all envision—a world without type 1 diabetes.
With gratitude and hope,
Kimberly and Colin Motley
