Tips to Kickstart Your Fundraising
in Fundraising
One of the best parts about One Walk is the incredible impact our community has on the future of T1D research through our collective fundraising. When you’re just starting out, fundraising can be daunting. We’ve asked a few veteran teams what their biggest tips are to help you get a kickstart to your fundraising:
“I primarily use email to fundraise since it’s almost guaranteed to be seen by everyone on the distribution list and is easy to follow up on. Email also allows more room to share exciting advancements and updates. I supplement it with some Facebook posts and texts to certain individuals, but email as proven very successful for me.”
–Cheryl S., One Walk Utah Co-Chair and Team Alex Team Captain
“I’ve found the most success in fundraising with social media. I connect my Breakthrough T1D One Walk account to the fundraiser link with Facebook. This allows friends and family to donate directly through Facebook. It’s easy to make updates on your account and add new stories to keep people interested in your fundraiser. People you never thought would donate may very well donate now that you’ve given them the option. Post new stories to your fundraising page often and share what it’s like to live with T1D, your successes and struggles.”
-Jaclyn E., One Walk Utah Co-Chair and Laila’s Lunar Mission Team Captain
“Here’s my family’s best advice:
1. After you’ve posted what you are doing on social media, make follow up posts as the Walk gets closer to let people know how it is going. The graphics on your team page or the Breakthrough T1D app make great screen shots to show your progress. If people see you are getting close to your goal they will want to help you close the gap!
2. Remind folks they can give anonymously so no shame in donating a small amount if that’s all they can afford. Every dollar counts!
3. Encourage others to share the link to your fundraising on their social media. You never know who will see it and want to help in some way.”
-Merissa Davis, Utah Community Board President and Team Captain of Otto Immune!
“I fundraise for One Walk in two main ways. First off, I bake super yummy treats and sell them to friends and family and sometimes involve my son’s school and his classmates. I also work at a dance studio and sell paper sneakers the month leading up to Walk Day for $1. Anyone who attends the dance school can write their name on a paper sneaker and we plaster a whole wall with them.”
-Julia C., Diabeat This Team Captain
